Season 3 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has stepped up the stakes as we’ve gone deeper into the season. Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. have dealt with Inhumans, the A.T.C.U., Ward’s rebooted Hydra, and more. With the mid-season finale closing in quickly, the show will be setting up what sounds to be one of the best episodes of the series.

After taking a week off for the holiday, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns this week for episode 3×09 titled “Closure” that will help set up what is to come during the mid-season finale next week. Hypable has had plenty of coverage over the final two episodes of the year, and teased some shake ups coming.

Here are 5 hints Hypable gave for what’s in-store this week

Ward’s history is (further) illuminated

Love him or loathe him, Grant Ward has been one of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s most perplexing threads since his season one betrayal. That betrayal, and Ward’s actions both before and since, is the unifying focus of “Closure,” as Coulson peers deeply into what makes his former agent tick. What he finds is not pretty, but whether or not anyone’s minds are changed about Ward remains to be seen.

Coulson is 1000% done

Coulson’s edges have grown visibly sharper as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 has progressed, but in “Closure,” the Director officially takes his knives out of the drawer. The pressure of Hydra, the alien Monolith, and most particularly Ward work a specific kind of alchemy on Coulson — and it isn’t necessarily flattering. “Closure” shows us Coulson at his most desperate, furious, and determined. It is by far his darkest incarnation yet, with drastic consequences that are only just beginning.

Daisy gets her team, ish

There aren’t a lot of light moments in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3×09 (like, at all) but we do get to see what might be the official beginnings of Daisy Johnson’s Secret Warriors. Through the gloom of “Closure,” there is an undeniable charge to the potential represented by a team of powered people… even if Daisy’s team might conceal its own heart of darkness.

Characters are taken… away

If Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has shown us anything, it’s that there’s more than one way to lose a character. This week’s episode explores several of those mechanisms, but let’s just say that not everyone who is present at the start of “Closure” is there at its end.

It’s cliffhanger time!

For an episode titled “Closure,” there isn’t much resolution to be had — which, granted, isn’t that surprising for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But the story is only stepping on the ignition by the end of Tuesday’s ridiculously intense hour, leaving many characters in various states of peril — oh, and the fate of the universe in question.

The big take away from these hints, for me, is the progression of the Secret Warriors team. Hopefully Joey (Juan Pablo Raba) gets to see some action, and if rumors are to believed, we will get to see Slingshot after the show returns from break.

The other interesting part is that some characters will be missing after the episode. Does the Monolith claim another victim, possibly Simmons again or Fitz trying to do the noble thing and save Will? Could someone take a permanent leave from the show? Or are they starting to further lay the groundwork for the Mockingbird/Hunter spinoff, Most Wanted? Guess we’ll find out soon.

Once we figure out what happens in “Closure,” we will be looking forward to the mid-season finale. Brett Dalton has previously teased a big surprise, and now Executive Producer Jeph Loeb is teasing even more.

I can only tell you that what happens before our winter finale… if you’re a fan of the show, you don’t want to miss it. There’s some really big surprises. The [writers] have really outdone themselves, and the cast is so extraordinary.

Whatever will happen in the mid-season finale should prove to be just as big – if not bigger – as the Winter Soldier connecting episode.

If you enjoyed [that], what is coming in the next two weeks is something that everyone will be talking about.

Last season’s mid-season finale ended with ~~Skye~~ Daisy gaining her Inhuman abilities and killed Trip (B.J. Britt) in the process. That moment shaped what has happened from that point on, but this year things get even bigger.

This mid-season finale has two shocking twists. Both of them are bigger than anything that happened in last season’s mid-season finale.

It’s impossible to guess what kinds of twists the show could pull off, but comparing it to the Hydra reveal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier should certainly get you excited.

Episode 3×09, “Closure”, of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air on ABC this Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST.
