With the release of the new promo for this week’s Agents of Hydra episode, we find our heroes deep in the desperate struggle to find Daisy/Skye, played by Chloe Bennet. Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and “The Patriot” Jeffery Mace (Jason O’Mara), lead the charge to find her, but are they too late? We find nothing but a sea of body bags within the Hydra bus.
Meanwhile, after the horrifying events of last weeks’ episode, “Identity and Change”, we see Agent Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) struggling to rectify what she witnessed with her own eyes. According to the teaser released this week, the revelation of Fitz’s turn, and seemingly boundless brutality, could shake the very foundation of the team. After witnessing the man she loves murder an innocent woman, Agnes, played by Mallory Jansen, Simmons is in a state of complete disbelief knowing that the Leopold she loves would never harm an innocent.
The masterful, almost Mr. Hyde like transformation of Agent Fitz, now known simply as “The Doctor” and the number two man in the framework’s Hydra organization, is played by Iain De Caestecker and has rocked audiences and his fellow Agents alike. We see him taking his role without resistance, and seemingly gleefully in this new Hydra world. This man is such an incredible departure from the generally happy, somewhat hapless but always kind Leopold Fitz that we have all come to know and love over the past four seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. So what could be behind this new, dark Doctor? What could be so profound as to change the fundamental core of his being, and twist him into someone so unrecognizable? The answer likely lies in his past.
As we know thus far, the theory behind the programming of the Framework is that each team member has one regret from their personal history erased and changed. For Agent May, actress Ming-Na Wen, that regret involved the Bahrain incident and we have seen the ripples of that regret in the formation of this new, dark reality. What regret could have been rectified in Fitz’s past that would twist his entire being and create a monster so far removed that he is unrecognizable? Could the answer lie with the character’s father, who has been mentioned several times since we’ve been taken to the Framework?
All answers will be revealed. Tune in to ABC Tuesday, April 18th for the answers!
