With the sad news of Bill Paxton‘s passing on Sunday, many of those who worked with the late actor have spent some time remembering the kind of person that he was. Of interest to MCU fans are the responses from cast members of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a show on which Paxton was the main villain during the first season. Clark Gregg opened up recently on the relationship he formed with the veteran actor and the ways that relationship continued long after he was written off of the show.

He left the show after season 1 and I showed up for work next season and they said “Bill is in your trailer”…People don’t do that. That doesn’t happen. He ended up doing Training Day on the same lot and I’d get to work and they’d say “Bill is in makeup, he’s waiting for you,” He was just the most incredible friend. He would come by all the time and we would just hang out…He had more great stories and more humility for a guy who had been more responsible for more quotable lines than probably anyone else…He was like a brother to me and I love him and I’ll miss him terribly…He was his usual great self [recently before his death]. He’s an art collector and a writer and creator and an amazing dad…He spends a lot of time going to galleries and buying art. We were talking about how I wanted to buy a piece and I asked him to go with me after this season was over to help me pick something.

The depth of the relationship between Paxton and Gregg is interesting. It would be easy to presume that Paxton saw a role like that on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as simply a quick payday. Certainly upon his passing few media outlets have even noted the role on the show, as much of his most famous work was in film. Even when it come to television, people associate him far more with Big Love than anything else. Yet he apparently kept a strong connection with some of the actors and valued the friendships.

On social media, many of those who worked with him and Gregg also left messages of condolence and respect.

By all accounts, he was a joy to work with for the whole cast. On another note, the current storyline of the show, without going into spoilers, would have allowed a return of Paxton. Early reports are, however, that there were no plans for him to appear.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in April for its last pod of this season. It stars Gregg, Wen, Henstridge, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, and Ian de Caestecker.
