It’s a tragic day for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and cinephiles in general from all over the world. Movie and TV icon Bill Paxton has died at the age of 61, following complications after undergoing heart surgery. In a statement released to the press by the Paxton family, they had this to say:
It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery. A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.
While most known for his iconic film roles in Aliens, Twister, and Predator 2, Paxton will forever be known to the fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his villainous role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the Clairvoyant John Garrett. The inclusion of Paxton in the first season of the then-fledgling show gave it a much-needed boost in star power and legitimacy that would help drive the show in the years to come. John Garrett was the first ever big bad we saw on the show and was played by Paxton with a magnetic bullish swagger and a relentlessness that cemented the character as one of the best villains the MCU. Paxton’s John Garrett was HYDRA personified and we loved to hate him for it.
He will be missed. Our thoughts go out to the Paxton family and to his fans all over the world.
