As James Gunn makes the move to Atlanta to prep for production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we should start getting some casting news for the movie by years end. What we do know, is that the 5 Guardians, Yondu, Nebula, and Kraglin will return and that there will be a few new characters introduced as well.
Since the core Guardians are returning, that means more of Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Drax was a great part of Guardians of the Galaxy with his unintentional humor, reckless abandon to avenge his family, and big heart.
Bautista can next be seen in Spectre where he will be playing the villain. While promoting the film, he spoke to Screen Rant and they brought up those pesky Guardians/Avengers crossover rumors. Based on old rumors, at one point Bautista and Marvel were discussing a contract extension so he could appear in one of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War films. The interview didn’t address this but they did talk about the possibilities, one in which he wants to happen.
Yeah, come on, man. Hell yeah. Yeah, of course I would. At the core of me is the biggest geek you’ve ever met. I’m a superhero fan first and foremost, and…of course, man, I want that to happen.
It’s rumors right now, but, you know, I pray every day…and night, and afternoon, and after you walk out the door I’ll go pray and say, “Please let Drax be in ‘The Avengers.’ ” [Laughter] Yeah, I hope it’ll happen.
It’ll be at least three years before this is a possibility and could be even longer. We will surely have a greater understanding of what the future holds for the Guardians as we lead up to Volume 2 and based on where it leaves them. Drax has already made it clear he wants to go after Thanos now, and it’s clear he has some big plans coming to fruition in Avengers: Infinity War.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 starts filming in February 2016 with it scheduled to hit theaters May 5, 2017.
