After his mystical debut in the MCU last year, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange quickly became a fan favorite character. His dry sense of humor and charisma was very reminiscent of Tony Stark’s, and that fans immediately began anticipating the day when we could see Strange interact with other MCU characters, especially certain members of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait too long to get a quick preview thanks to the mid-credits scene in Doctor Strange. Thor’s reaction to Strange’s mystical ale refilling itself was definitely fun to watch, and we can’t wait to see how they continue to interact later this year in Thor: Ragnarok. However, the best is yet to come, as Cumberbatch has been announced to return to the role of the Sorcerer Supreme next year in Avengers: Infinity War. The cast has been slowly trickling into Atlanta to start filming, and while Cumberbatch has yet to be spotted on set, he has started reading the script. While he doesn’t let anything slip about the plot, he did have high praise for it:
“I’ve got a script and I’ve been reading it; it’s very, very good fun.”
We can only assume that he’s referring to the inevitable humorous moments that will be involved in uniting together the Avengers, Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy together against a common threat. Just thinking about Strange’s first meeting with Tony Stark alone will surely be a highlight of the film, not to mention Strange’s potential first interactions with the likes of Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Although there will most likely be many humorous moments in the film, I wouldn’t worry too much about the tone being too light. While many are concerned about Taika Waititi’s approach to the humor in Ragnarok, I don’t think we have to worry about Infinity War in that way. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo were able to combine the funny and lighthearted elements of Captain America: Civil War while still keeping the overall tone somewhat somber.
