We’re a little over a month away from the start of production on Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, which means we’re finally beginning to hear more about the highly anticipated sequel. Over the past few months, we’ve heard about potential new castings (Kurt Russell possibly playing Star-Lord’s father), as well as actors that have passed on the project (Matthew McConaughey). And inbetween all of the rumors surrounding the film, we learned of an official casting when Pom Klementieff was announced as being cast as Mantis.
With James Gunn having previously stated that there won’t be too many new characters brought in, fans expected most of the cast from the first film to return. And for awhile there, it appeared that Benicio Del Toro‘s The Collector would be one of those characters. While he’d expressed some uncertainty in the past about being brought back for the sequel, Zoe Saldana (Gamora) had seemingly confirmed his return in a video she’d uploaded to Facebook.
Now, it appears as though we can officially count Del Toro out, as the actor has yet to hear anything from Marvel a month out from production on the sequel. While speaking with the folks over at Coming Soon for his latest film A Perfect Day, Del Toro was asked if we could expect him to return for Vol. 2, to which he replied:
“I don’t think so,” Del Toro said when asked about The Collector returning. “They would have told me, I hope… I do hope to play that character again at some point.”
Of course, things could change by the time cameras start rolling next month, but for now, it doesn’t seem like we’ll see The Collector in Vol. 2.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 will hit movie theaters on May 5th, 2017.
