At long last!
Late last night, the highly anticipated trailer for Captain America: Civil War hit the web and has left fans drooling and weeping for the incredible footage it premiered. We got great hints and amazing first-looks at the soon to be disassembled Avengers team. As always with any new Marvel trailer, here’s our take on what went down.
“Buck.. do you remember me?”
“Your mom’s name was Sarah. You used to wear newspapers in your shoes.”
Kicking off the trailer is an incredibly poignant scene between Cap and Bucky. Straight out of the Ant-Man post credits scene, we are made aware that Bucky has indeed regained all his memories and sense of morality. In this powerful exchange, its apparent that Bucky is a significant catalyst in this Civil War.
“You’re a wanted man.”
“I don’t do that anymore.”
We witness an explosion in what looks to be at a UN conference hall. Perhaps a ruse orchestrated by Baron Zemo to pin Bucky? I’ve always envisioned the MCU Baron Zemo to be a politician of sorts. Given his role as the true big bad of this movie, it’s highly likely that this is the case as it gives him the power necessary to pull all the strings.
“The people who think you did are coming right now. And I plan on taking you alive.”
One of the best things the Russos bring to the table is their affinity for some high-octane Bourne-esque action sequences. As evident with this shot, its highly likely that Civil War ends up smoking all those Winter Soldier action sequences. Another interesting about this shot, it resembles those leaked set pics of Bucky and Black Panther jumping off a rooftop.
“Captain… while a great many people see you as a hero, there are some who prefer the word vigilante.”
Ah General Ross. Your presence in the MCU has been sorely missed. Him appearing in Civil War just makes The Incredible Hulk retroactively more enjoyable to watch considering the significance of his role in the MCU’s future. In this scene, Ross gives a lecture on the growing public unrest behind the actions of the Avengers. The events of The Incredible Hulk have ruined Ross’ career as a military general so this newly appointed position is likely him making amends for the Abomination.
“That’s something the world can no longer tolerate.”
Our first glimpse at the often talked about Sokovia Accords. Superhuman order is in shambles after the destructive events of Ultron in Sokovia and the Avengers are being held responsible for it. Replacing the Superhuman Registration in the comics, the Sokovia Accords is speculated to be an accountability act that will require the Avengers to submit to a UN-sanctioned government organization. It’s like them working for a much shadier version of SHIELD.
Also worth noting that Scarlet Witch is on the receiving end of this document. Losing her brother in Battle of Sokovia and all, this could be a highly personal thing to her.
“I know how much Bucky means to you. Stay out of this one… please. You will only make this worse”
“Are you saying you’ll arrest me?”
The events of Winter Soldier are repeating itself, this time with Cap and Nat on opposing sides. It’s wonderful to see this kind of dynamic between the two once more. Also, how beautiful is Natasha with her new hairdo? She just rocks whatever hairstyle they give her.
“There will be consequences.”
This shot is a pretty close recreation of Cap’s arrest scene in the Civil War comic. Only difference is that the comic arrest scene took place in a helicarrier and this one looks to be inside a parking garage. Whatever, we’ll take it!! With no jet to hitch on, it’d be interesting to see how he gets out of this. Also notice the missing Avengers logo on his shoulder? Cap is clearly unhappy being affiliated with the Avengers.
“Captain, you seem a little defensive.”
“Well it’s been a long day.“
Our first look at Tony Stark in this movie. That black eye indicates that their parties have been going at it for a while. It’s so crazy to think how far Tony Stark’s character has gone; from being the jackass who cracks jokes at senate hearings to a staunch supporter of government regulations.
“If we can’t accept limitations, we’re no different from the bad guys.”
“That’s not the way I see it.”
“Sometimes I just want to punch you in your perfect teeth.”
We get a quick glance at Martin Freeman‘s mystery character in this shot alongside Agent 13. Cap has also seemingly surrendered his belongings to their party.
“I just wanna make sure we consider all our options.”
“Coz’ people that shoot at you usually wind up shooting at me too.”
Damn, the chemistry between Evans and Mackie is always on point. Their movie bromance is bound to go down as one of the most enjoyable in movie history. AND HOW BEAUTIFUL IS FALCON’S SPIN MOVE?!
“You know what’s about to happen. Do you really want to punch your way out of this?”
“What do we do?”
Early shots of this scene leaked when the D23 trailer premiered. While I admit that it looked hilariously clunky back then, it looks pretty awesome now. If I’m not mistaken, this was the tarmac scene they filmed in Leipzig, Germany. Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man is rumored to be included in this scene too. Looks like Scarlet Witch has a bit of ’em flying abilities now. Also check out Hawkeye’s new suit!
“Sorry Tony. You know I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t have any other choice. But he’s my friend.”
“So was I.”
The money shot of this entire trailer. After years of friendship and fighting together, it’s the end of the road for these two. Nothing will stop Cap from protecting the lifelong friend he believes to be innocent. Sans the clunky CGI shield, their fight scene looks seriously bonkers. Worth noting too that this fight scene takes place in a snowy area. In the APCC footage I saw, there were scenes of Bucky and Cap infiltrating a snow-covered hidden base. It’s likely that its this one.
The Black Panther Highway Chase – the prevailing rumor about Black Panther’s involvement in Civil War is that Bucky is the suspected murderer of T’Challa’s father T’Chaka and that Black Panther has been hunting him for months.
The Institute For Infectious Diseases – a couple of months back, a bunch of set pictures from this location found their way online. One of which showcased a sign that had The Institute For Infectious Diseases written on it. Several scenes in the trailer seem to take place in the IFID. The cool ass Falcon scene takes place on the rooftop along with this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of Crossbones and his team infiltrating the place. (Pictured below.) From it’s name alone and the gas masks worn by the team, it’s clear that this location harbors something potentially dangerous. Can we expect a biological attack to happen in this movie like in Avengers: Red Zone?
An Unconscious Reactor-less Rhodey – one of the more powerful shots in the movie, we see an incredibly beat up War machine lying in the arms of Tony Stark, missing an arc reactor. In the money shot fight scene of the trailer, there’s a clear shot of Bucky trying to get through Iron Man’s arc reactor. That could mean two things: they need the arc reactor for something or they just need to quickly shutdown Iron Man/War Machine’s armor. Judging from the damaged airport in the background, its safe to assume that this is the aftermath of that tarmac fight.
The Abscence of Other Key Characters – missing from the trailer are Vision, Scott Lang, Baron Zemo and the obvious Spider-Man. The Vision appeared in the D23 trailer wearing a suit while playing chess. Scott Lang too was included in the D23 trailer in a hilarious scene where he gushes over meeting Cap’s renegade Avengers team. Like Spider-Man, Zemo is sadly absent from all released footage. Also absent from this trailer is the often talked about funeral scene of a significant MCU British character.
So there you have it! That was an amazing trailer from start to finish. The Russos are indeed shaping up to be one of the most consistent directors in the MCU and this trailer is a fair indication of it. A fantastic tease to bookend our hype in 2015. What did you think of the trailer? What are your favorite moments?
