With this weekend’s numbers are still not finalized, the estimated opening weekend numbers for Captain America: Civil War mark another success for Marvel. Previous estimates pegged the movie opening to more than $190M, which was up a tad from where the film was originally tracking. Barring a big Mother’s Day audience, it will come in just below those numbers. The start to Phase 3 is currently estimated to open to around $182M domestically, which makes it the third highest opening for a Marvel movie, trailing only The Avengers ($207M) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191M).
Lots of people had thought the movie could open to over $200M and be the highest grossing Marvel film, but The Avengers should be able to hold on to their record for awhile. Oversees however, the movie has been another hit as well with it estimated to gross $95.8M in the first three days in China. This gives Civil War the second best opening weekend of all time in the country according to ERC Box Office. In total, when the weekend numbers are in the film will be only a few million dollars away from surpassing $700M worldwide, and is already nearing to surpass Captain America: The Winter Soldier for the fifth highest grossing film worldwide in the MCU.
