It is hard to believe that we are nearing the two year anniversary from when Marvel Studios walked Chadwick Boseman out on stage at the El Capitan Theatre to announce that, not only was he cast as T’Challa, but that he would make his debut in Captain America: Civil War. Black Panther’s debut was long requested and even though we might have had to wait a bit longer than fans would have wanted, Boseman was one of the many highlights from the film. Now that audiences have been introduced to the King of Wakanda, the wait for 2018 seems unbearable at this point.
When Black Panther does finally roll into theaters, it will do so with not only Boseman back in the leading role, but a talented group around him. Ryan Coogler is an exciting choice to direct and recently announced co-stars Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, and Danai Gurira will provide further access to what Wakanda holds. Lupita recently revealed some plot details that point towards a struggle for power, but what does Boseman want to see explored further? In an interview with Collider, he revealed the desire for more technology and T’Challa’s expert like strategy to be explored.
I want to see, you know, more of the technology revealed, more of the technology of Wakanda revealed. I think some of that is gadgets but also spiritual technology, it’s an ancestral technology, and I think more of his strategy. In Civil War, he’s very direct. You know exactly what he’s going after, exactly what he’s doing. One of the things I like in the comics is he plays a lot of chess, he has a lot of strategy. I think you also need to see that aspect of the character moving forward where he’s not as direct, or seems directed at actually something else.
Due to him being a breakout star in Civil War, it would be easy for them to give Boseman the majority of the screen time, especially with it being his movie and all. However, with a great early cast assembled, there should be a further exploration of the entire country of Wakanda. No matter how much time is spent with T’Challa, there is sure to be a good amount of action involved. Boseman is hoping that he gets to fight outside of the Black Panther suit to offer a further look at the character’s natural abilities.
I think part of the challenge is going to continue to be just being able to move in the suit and find moments you can fight outside of the suit in the story as well, cause I think that tells a whole different story and a good story. One of the scenes I like in the movie is when he gets in the fight with Winter Solider and he doesn’t have the suit. Nobody has there weapons or their gadgets, so I feel like that’s good story telling because it tells you, oh it’s not just the suit, he has abilities of his own and it makes you ask more questions about it.
Not only was Boseman’s performance incredible in Civil War, but the way the chose to depict his movement and fighting style made him standout in any scene he was in. I expect more of the same in Black Panther, it is just unfortunate that we must wait almost two years from his debut to see him again.
