The next installment of the Netflix Marvel universe will be Luke Cage. While we have already met the titular character, portrayed by Mike Colter in Jessica Jones, his own show is promised to be something completely different. With the cast gathered at San Diego Comic-Con today, they have been doing the interview circuit, revealing more tidbits about the show.

While talking with Entertainment Weekly, show-runner Cheo Hodari Coker immediately tied the strength of Luke Cage, as a superhero, with current events.

There’s never been a time in history where having a bulletproof black man, in terms of just looking at how that affects a neighborhood, in terms of looking at, for example, how it not only changes law enforcement but also changes the criminal world, and really in a sense, it’s like Luke’s entrance into this world changes the ecology of the entire neighborhood.

The relationships between police and the community have been at the forefront of the news cycle these days, and it will be interesting to see how this subject is addressed. Of course, the call for a more diverse cast of characters has been common for Marvel fans, and Marvel Executive Jeph Loeb brought up that Luke was a trailblazer in that regard, when the comics first debuted.

Luke Cage, when he came on the scene in the early ’70s was for all intents and purposes the first black superhero. Given what’s going on present day, it just resonates.

The diversity of cast isn’t the only change for this Netflix series, which will take place in Harlem, rather than Daredevil and Jessica Jones’ Hell’s Kitchen. Colter explained that this change, in itself, will help the show have a unique feel.

It’s a completely different world. It has its own flavor, its own feel, the people are different, the culture is different, there’s a certain musicality to it, so I really think that just bringing it to Harlem changed it up a lot.

There is sure to be plenty more news surrounding Luke Cage as the day goes on. The cast will be at a panel later this evening, which is promised to have some new footage. Stay tuned here for all of the latest information!
