There’s still some time left until Black Panther hits theaters in February 2018, but at a special open house in L.A. yesterday, Marvel Studios offered members of the press a first look at some early footage of the film. The event for the press featured looks at Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel and even a full screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It also included a sizzle reel which featured Black Panther director Ryan Coogler sharing his enthusiasm to be working on the project:
“I’m super excited about an African king who is also strong enough, fast enough, smart enough to do some of the things that T’Challa is going to do in this film.”
Description of the footage shed more light on T’Challa’s supporting cast, including the first look at Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, who takes down an entire group of armed mercenaries in the jungle. A lot of praise is given to the prop and costume designs, as Angela Bassett, who plays T’Challa’s mother Ramonda, entered the room in a honey robe and enormous headpiece.
Many also praise the combination of traditional African culture with modern high-tech futurism that breathes life into Wakanda. It’s a world where technology and nature work together, highlighting the traditions that the inhabitants maintain. There is a beautiful shot of T’Challa in the forest, as he stands in front to fa tree draped with a dozen panthers.
There is an exchange between Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross and Age of Ultron’s Ulysses Klaue, once again played by Andy Serkis, as he enters a casino with his group.
Ross: “Well, you brought quite the entourage, do you have a mixtape coming out?
Klaue: “Oh yeah, I’ll actually send you a link.”
Just like his comics counterpart, Klaue has received a new arm to replace the one that Ultron cut off in his tantrum. The arm was described as a mechanical arm, though there was no mention of his famous sonic cannon from the comics just yet. There were also hints at characters fighting what seemed to be rhino-mechs and Nyong’o wearing cannon blasters on her hands.
The footage also featured T’Challa making his way towards Warrior Falls to accept his coronation as king. This could hint at a large part of his story being the conflict of taking over for his father, and the weight that crown will carry. There were also mentions of a scene with T’Challa holding traditional ceremonial weapons to take over the role of a monarch. It also offered a look at Nyong’o and Danai Gurira working together, and a first look at Forest Whitaker’s Zuri.
Killmonger, played by Creed star Michael B. Jordan, was noticeably absent, but did appear in some artwork in the sizzle reel, alongside an interview with the actor pointing out what tone we can expect from the upcoming film.
“The story is just going to be very honest and gritty. I think it’s a lot of the right ingredients that we have to make something really special.”
