Theory time. Coulson spent the past two seasons of AoS as Director, heading up the entire SHIELD organization. Of which we saw all the main players and despite the many background extras it made the organization feel small and very connected.
The problem with this?
If Coulson made an appearance in the movies, you’d have to then include or do a lot of leg work to explain why the whole of SHIELD didn’t involve itself or the other primary members of the team with whatever event he makes an appearance during.
Enter AoS S4: Agent Coulson returns.
Coulson is once again an agent, not in charge of much and in fact SHIELD has reformed to resemble the ways of the past. Everything is known on a need to know basis, there isn’t much connectivity between characters and the involvement of one character doesn’t imply the involvement of others and from that point, certainly not the whole of SHIELD. Episode one immediately establishes the roguish nature of Coulson, he is ready and willing to go on his own missions, play it close to the chest and not involve many others.
For these reasons, I believe the powers that be (Feige and Loeb) are positioning Coulson to re-enter the MCU proper without an entire crossover. Don’t expect the Avengers to show up in AoU, expect Coulson to take a leave from the show temporarily.
What movie could he appear in? I don’t know. I’d love to believe it will be Infinity War but at this point, it could be anything, it could be Tony asking him to keep an eye on Peter, it could also simply be Coulson stepping into the Netflix series to assist of his own accord. The door is opening, will the step through it?
