During last week’s episode of Agent Carter, we got more than a few hints as to the future of Edwin Jarvis. His desire to stay a butler was questioned. His voice was used for a security system, teasing him eventually being the inspiration of J.A.R.V.I.S. by Tony Stark.
Earlier today, IGN released an interview with James D’Arcy where they talked about what is in store for Jarvis moving forward. When Howard (Dominic Cooper) asked Jarvis about his interest in leaving his side to spend more time working with Peggy, he gave a very appropriate response. D’Arcy thinks Jarvis is wanting more action in his life.
I think I answered the question by saying I’m perfectly happy with the job that I’ve got, which I think it’s fair to say is the truth. Having said that, an addendum to that would be it’s pretty clear that he really likes Peggy’s life. He finds it quite exciting, he wants to be observant, and he also really cares for Peggy and always has. Almost as soon as they met he’s been very, very, very fond of her and looked out for her, and I think he can’t bear her suffering. All of those things added together … I do think he likes his job.
His desire to spend more time being spies with Peggy is a direct result of the two of them sharing incredible chemistry. Their relationship makes it harder for Jarvis to stay away.
There’s a huge amount of adrenaline, isn’t there? We saw in Season 1 he was sort of jolted out of his life. His life was pretty structured and straightforward, and suddenly something profoundly different was happening. I think he really felt part of something, part of a team, and useful — and also he immediately was very close to Peggy and very good friends with her, and wanted to help. All of those things added together, I suppose that’s what it is. I don’t think that Jarvis is, in his head, thinking that he’s going to be doing her job with her. I think he just thinks there are certain things he’s very good at, and he’d love to be a part of that.
Earlier in the season we met his wife Ana (Lotte Verbeek), but she has not yet been a major factor in the story. D’Arcy says that when she returns, it will be for a good reason.
She didn’t just drop in for a couple of episodes and then we’ll never see her again. She has a really important role to play in this second season, so she’s coming back — I just can’t remember exactly which episode. She’s coming back, and she’s got a very big part to play.
When Jarvis’ voice went over the intercoms at Stark Mansion, most of us immediately thought how this could be the beginning of Jarvis becoming J.A.R.V.I.S. This transformation cannot take place until Tony Stark is in the picture, and as far as D’Arcy can tell, we would have to wait quite some time before that happens.
Well, we’d have to get into a time machine, wouldn’t we? I can’t figure this out. Tony Stark must be born in the ’60s, and we’re in the late ’40s, and we’re moving forward by six months a season. We’ll have to meet him in Season 24 or something like that.
Episode 2×04 of Agent Carter, “Smoke And Mirrors”, airs tonight at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
