In a Facebook post answering “Really Frequently Asked Questions” from fans, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gun offered a few new details about his upcoming sequel, including the relationship between the Groot we knew and loved in Vol. 1 and the new Baby Groot in Vol. 2:
Q: Is baby Groot the same as Groot, or Groot’s son?
A: It’s complicated.
Q: Does he have Groot’s memories?
Q: Does baby Groot stay baby Groot for all of Guardians Vol. 2?
A: Haha look at that cute thing my cat is doing.
Q: You’re avoiding the question.
A: I know. What’s your next question?
Gunn’s comments seem to imply that there’s much more to Baby Groot than he’s letting on, and his growth and transformation will likely play a large part in the film. Gunn also addressed Vin Diesel‘s recent comments suggesting that the Guardians would be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War:
Q: Are they in Infinity Wars or not?
Q: Do you know?
A: Yes, I know.
Q: Vin said they were!
A: I know that too.
Finally, Gunn answered a question about his own creative freedom in writing and directing Vol. 2, saying:
The film, story, and character arcs are all mine….Marvel and I have the same goal for Guardians Vol. 2 – to make the biggest, most incredible spectacle film of all time, that honors the characters, and surprises audiences in a positive way. So until I screw up, they allow me to do my thing. And I’m grateful for that opportunity.
