USA Today unveiled their slate for their 2017 film preview and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was included in the discussion. James Gunn spoke to the outlet about the relationship of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his father, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), in the film. Gunn hinted that the relationship between the two might contain a twist that may cause Quill to reassess his initial impression of his father.
It runs the gamut of emotions for him, wanting to understand why his father wasn’t around to quickly idolizing him and ultimately learning the reality of the relationship and comparing the man who sired him to the man who raised him.
These comments appear to outline that Quill will at first see the return of his long-lost father as someone to look up to. However, Gunn‘s comments about the reality of the relationship being revealed may indicate that Ego may have other motivations for his son than a family reunion. Quill may have cause to compare Ego’s parental style with that of Yondu, who originally abducted him from Earth at the behest of Ego. (Michael Rooker)
In the first film, Yondu was depicted as having chosen to raise Peter outright rather than give him to Ego as he was originally hired to do. Although outwardly gruff and confrontational, he was also shown to have a soft spot for Quill, keeping him from harm and allowing him to take a place among his crew. Ego’s personality is currently unknown, but he was referred to as a “jackass” by Yondu at the conclusion of the first film.
Gunn also talked about the new family dynamic surrounding the Guardians as they progress into their second adventure. As they have now unified into a team, that may require them to trust each other more than they were initially willing. Each member of the team also comes from very difficult backgrounds and have no attachments, other than each other, to which they can return.
To let somebody love you is a very difficult thing, especially when you’re damaged goods. And all of the Guardians are damaged goods.”
It’ll be interesting to see how their relationships play out especially now that the sage of sexual love Mantis, is now included in the team. If that hilarious bit at the end of the trailer is any indication of what’s to come and what secrets there are to be outed, we’re going to have one hell of a time. Who knows what Mantis finds out when she places her hand on Drax.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will release on May 5, 2017. The film sees the return of everyone’s favorite ragtag group of goons, the addition of the sage of Peter Quill’s sexual love, Mantis along with former baddie, Nebula. The sequel also marks the debut of 80’s superstars Kurt Russel and Sylvester Stallone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No word yet on who Stallone is playing but we’re hoping that it’s one of the OG Guardians from the 1960’s.
