With the recent announcement that Marvel and IMAX are teaming up for a Inhumans TV series, the idea of a feature film is becoming less and less likely. While Kevin Feige himself mentioned previously a movie may not be completely off the table, it’s certainly in the distant future at this point.
If you remember in the past Vin Diesel did a fair amount of teasing that he would play the character Black Bolt when the movie would release. Diesel is known most recently for playing the main character in the Fast and Furious franchise along with the action film XXX and it’s upcoming sequel. But, before that, he had a breakout role with the quiet, yet intimidating, Richard B. Riddick in Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black. This is likely where the comparison to Black Bolt could be made since the character must remain silent in order to control his extremely powerful vocal cords. This also means body language and facial expressions are his main form of communication. When you combine this with the fact that Diesel is already using his voice for the completely CG role of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2, it made sense that Marvel could cast Diesel as Black Bolt as well. However, with the TV show more than likely replacing the feature film, this idea is a lot less likely and Guardians director James Gunn agrees. When responding to a Facebook question about if Diesel could still play Black Bolt, Gunn had this to say:
The Inhumans is going to be a TV show. Unless Vin wants to take a huge pay cut and sign up to do a TV show it seems unlikely
This really doesn’t come as a complete surprise since the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been relatively consistent with casting one actor for one role throughout its different TV and Film media. Despite primarily playing one type of action role, Diesel has carved out a very successful film career for himself. In contrast, Television would be a much bigger gamble for the film star at this point, and as noted, a significant pay cut.
Gunn and Diesel are considerably close. In the past, they released a video together showing off the two hanging out expressing their excitement over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. So it’s really no surprise that Gunn would possibly cover for his friend here, especially if it might be a big disappointment to some fans that Diesel probably won’t play Black Bolt.
However, the question now is who is the next option for Marvel for the role of Black Bolt? Let us know who you think could portray the leader of the Inhuman royal family in the comments below. You can check out our fan-casting for the series here.
