Although Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb is on hand at SDCC this week to promote both Luke Cage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – the latter of which will take the stage later today – he’s also been promoting Iron Fist and The Defenders. In fact, during the Netflix panel yesterday, a panel that was originally thought to be solely for Luke Cage, Loeb brought out Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) to tease his character’s upcoming spin-off, while also releasing teasers for both Iron Fist and The Defenders prior to confirming a third season of Daredevil. It’s a busy time for Loeb, who is also working on the upcoming Cloak & Dagger for Freeform, but the impressive amount of shows under his belt don’t seem to be hindering his excitement for upcoming projects.
Taking some time out to talk to the folks over at Comicbook.com, Loeb explained where they’re at right now with the Netflix shows, stating that Iron Fist is currently filming in New York, which will then be followed by The Defenders – a series that’ll see our street-level heroes come together for the first time as a team. For Loeb, as exciting as it is to consider what it’ll be like seeing The Defenders together for the first time, he’s more focused on the characters and the story.
“Iron Fist is filming now, and it’s going spectacularly. It’s a very different story from this kind of story. Danny Rand lives in a different world than Luke Cage lives in,” Loeb said. “Am I looking forward to the day when they all get together? Yes! But the part that’s exciting to me isn’t that they may be able to be fighting some great big bad, it’s that we’ve been able to take the time so that you can get to know Matt Murdock, get to know Jessica Jones, get to know Luke Cage, get to know Danny Rand, and each of them have their own 13 hour story, in some cases more than that, and really get invested in who those heroes are.”
In fact, Loeb is already thinking ahead to how the characters will act when they come face to face with one another. They’re each so different, with their own distinctive personalities and worlds, that it’s hard not to be intrigued as to what to expect in The Defenders.
“My question is, okay, what happens when they then meet? They’re very different people. They have very different ways of pursuing their lives. They have a very different way of what they believe in. That’s what’s interesting to me. Hopefully those are the kinds of things we’ll be able to explore once we get into the Defenders world.”
Loeb will join the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast later today for their signing and panel at SDCC. Here’s to hoping that, like last night’s panel, today’s S.H.I.E.L.D. panel is just as full of surprises!
