Following her work on the first two episodes of Jessica Jones last year, Marvel has announced that acclaimed director S.J. Clarkson is set to return to the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct the first two episodes of The Defenders. In the announcement, the entertainment giant also confirmed what we’ve all known for some time now, that the series will consist of eight episodes and will debut sometime in 2017.
Marvel Television and Netflix announced today that acclaimed film and television director S.J. Clarkson (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” “Vinyl, “Orange is the New Black”), will return to the Marvel universe to direct the first two episodes of the Netflix original series “Marvel’s The Defenders.” Clarkson will also serve as an Executive Producer on the premiere episode. The 8-episode limited series is slated to debut in 2017.
Clarkson has built up a rather impressive resume throughout the years, having also worked on shows such as Orange is the New Black, Bates Motel, and Dexter. And her work on both AKA Ladies Night and AKA Crush Syndrome was absolutely fantastic. So I’m incredibly excited to see her return, especially on a project such as The Defenders. If Clarkson is among those they’re looking to bring in behind the camera for the mini-series, I’m eager to see who else showrunners Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie have in mind for the remaining six episodes.
On bringing back Clarkson to work on The Defenders, Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb had nothing but praise for the director, stating they couldn’t think of “a more talented and accomplished person” to tackle the first two episodes.
“S.J.’s take on the material is outstanding. We loved her work on “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” and couldn’t think of a more talented and accomplished person to helm the first two episodes of “Marvel’s The Defenders,” said Marvel’s Head of Television and Executive Producer, Jeph Loeb.
Along with the announcement that Clarkson will be handling the first two episodes, Marvel unveiled an updated synopsis for the mini-series.
“Marvel’s The Defenders” follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.
The Defenders will hit the streaming service sometime in 2017. Until then, you can catch-up on all news regarding the highly-anticipated series by following along here.
