Actress Scarlet Johansson has been named as 2016’s highest grossing actor according to Forbes magazine. Johansson, who plays former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff (a.k.a. Black Widow), earned the top spot after starring in May’s megablockbuster Captain America: Civil War, which earned $1.15 billion at the worldwide box office on its way to becoming the highest grossing movie of this year.
After the third installment in the Captain America, Johansson appeared in the ensemble hit Hail Caesar! alongside actors Josh Brolin, George Clooney, and Jonah Hill. Hail Caesar! grossed right around $60 million worldwide to bring Johannson’s box office total to $1.20 billion total.
Johannson wasn’t the only part of the MCU to make the list. Actors Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. co-starred alongside Johannson in Civil War in their lone cinematic appearance of the year tying for second place on the Forbes list after Civil War‘s big $1.15 billion pay day.
Although not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fox’s Deadpool, another Marvel comic character, brought in $783 million worldwide while actors of Warner Brothers’ two entries in their DC Extended Universe, Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad make up over half of the Forbes list. Needless to say, the superhero genre is moving forward full steam ahead and isn’t showing any signs of stopping any time soon.
Fans have longed for a solo project featuring Romanoff as the former Russian spy-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and the actress has even expressed a little interest in doing a standalone project. With the future of Marvel Cinematic Universe still quite murky in a post-Avengers: Infinity War world, it’s not entirely out of the question we could see a solo project featuring Johannson as Black Widow.
