Over the past couple of weeks, Marvel Studios has begun to pull back the curtains on their second film release this year, Doctor Strange, which is currently in production in London. We’ve gotten our first look at star Benedict Cumberbatch in costume, some fascinating pieces of concept art, and a few hints at who both Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen will be playing in the film. Now, courtesy of a new interview with Empire Magazine, we may have a better idea as to who Mikkelsen is playing, all thanks to a certain quote from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

While describing the character as “an arrogant neurosurgeon in Manhattan, living a very opulent lifestyle”, Feige noted that, in the aftermath of the accident and the damage it does to his hands, we’ll see the character experience a “downward path”.

“He gets into a horrible car accident and his hands, the tools by which he can do amazing surgeries, are mangled and destroyed. That starts his downward path, and that’s why Benedict is such a great choice – you can go to the highest heights and lowest lows with him and he won’t lose you.”

The most interesting part of the interview, however, and the one that may give a better idea as to who Mikkelsen is playing is the quote in which Feige confirms the Dark Dimension for the film.

“We see glimpses of something called the Dark Dimension,” he said. “But if you were to open a Doctor Strange comic drawn by Steve Ditko, you would see the Dark Dimension is, in fact, very colorful in an extremely psychedelic way. Those are the things we’re not shying away from.”

Comic Book Movie speculates that, given that Dormammu and Umar were banished to the Dark Dimension, it’s possible that Mikkelsen is playing Dormammu as originally speculated – even though Feige has previously indicated otherwise. They also speculate that Amy Landecker could be playing Umar. Even if these speculations prove to be wrong, it’s still exciting to know that they will at least touch upon the Dark Dimension with Doctor Strange.

What do you think? Do you agree with these speculations? Sound off in the comments below!
