As 2015 comes to a close, 2016 will be a big year for Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be the year that both Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange hit theaters, bring multiple new heroes into the massive universe that Marvel Studios has constructed on screen throughout the years. It will also be the last year with only two Marvel movies a year.

Starting in 2017, we will be getting three movies inside the MCU, along with content on television and Netflix. The first of those films will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is already in pre-production and set to begin filming in February.

Outside of the casting of Pom Klementieff and the revelation that Matthew McConaughey passed on a role in the upcoming sequel, things had been relatively quiet on the Guardians front until The Wrap dropped a massive casting rumor a week ago.

The most recent rumor surrounding the project is that Kurt Russell is the favorite to play Star-Lord’s father. While we await further comment on the deal, and who the role is, Russell was asked about the rumor on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He could not say much, but he did confirm the talks.

I literally got a phone call two days ago about this.

It is hard for Russell to get too excited about the role being as he is unfamiliar with the property.

I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it.

While he did have preliminary talks with director James Gunn, his lack of knowledge on the subject made it difficult to truly get a handle on what the role would be. As for what he told Gunn, he said,

Thank you for considering me, I have to read it and I have to watch the movie cause I can’t bring anything for ya.

Rumors about Marvel casting pop up all the time and it is not uncommon for the actors involved to be unfamiliar with the roles. For Russell, he is in the same boat.

Everybody knows more about it than I do.

Hopefully this pans out, as adding someone of Russell’s caliber will only further drive excitement for the sequel. With the main cast all confirmed to return, it will be interesting to see just how big of a role he would have.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters May 5, 2017.
