Among the many things we hoped to get out of Marvel Studio’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con this year, getting more information on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was high on our list. It did not seem likely that after all this secrecy, Gunn and Marvel would give us much, but they sure did. One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film so far has been Kurt Russell inclusion with the project. It had been heavily reported that he was Star-Lord’s father but as what character remained to be seen. Rumors of Mar-Vell and other original Guardians took a shot at correctly predicting who he could be, but even after reports came out that Ego The Living Planet was involved, there was hardly anybody who thought the two could actually connect.

As Marvel would like to have it, most, if not all of us, were wrong on our predictions because during the panel, they confirmed that Russell is not only Star-Lord’s father, but that he is playing Ego.

During the panel itself, James Gunn and the rest of the cast were asked about Russell’s involvement in the upcoming film and thanks to EW, we have full quotes for what they said. For Gunn, this character helped shape part of what came before and will play a big role when he makes his debut next year.

Gunn: Kurt’s character is an incredibly important role. For me, he was the center — his character, even before he was around — was the center of what this movie was. We had a great camaraderie on the first film, but when Kurt and Pom started coming around, it seemed even better.

As for Chris Pratt, finding out that your father is a giant planet with a face on it can not be the easiest pill to swallow. However, without getting into what their relationship is like onscreen, Pratt talked about how they interact offscreen. It has gone so well apparently, that Russell will not only play his father in the movie, but in real life as well.

Pratt: It’s rare you get an opportunity to work with somebody you’ve admired as long as I’ve admired Kurt and his work. Sometimes you do that and you meet someone and you’re kind of let down. This is not that case.

Kurt’s awesome. We have a lot in common. We talked for hours and hours and hours, and almost none of that talk was even about the movie. It was just about life. We’ve formed, I think, a pretty incredible bond and I think we’ll be friends for a long time. He’s decided to be my dad in real life.

How does a planet impregnate a woman on Earth? We will have to wait and see, but it should be quite the explanation when the time comes. I can’t imagine Star-Lord or Rocket for that matter being able to handle this news without some confusion. So yes, Ego The Living Planet is confirmed to be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Kurt Russell will be portraying him. This should be fun.
