This has been a big and busy year for Marvel. They brought two movies to theaters, two original Netflix series, and two more television shows on ABC. Throughout it all, rumors have popped up about these projects but also upcoming ones.
With the year coming to a close, we have decided to take a look back at some of the biggest rumors of the year. Some of these rumors have proven to be true, some false, and some are still unknown. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what did or did not transpire in 2015.
1. Mantis Appearing In Age of Ultron
Prior to the May release for Avengers: Age of Ultron, director Joss Whedon had commented that the film would have a greater female presence. Later on, the guys over at Schmoes Know dropped a scoop that they knew what new female character would be introduced. According to their sources, the movie was going to be the debut for Mantis. She would later serve as the bridging point between the Guardians and Avengers. However, this proved to be untrue, even though it appears that we will see her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 played by Pom Klementieff.
2. Angelina Jolie As Future Marvel Director
There has been a big push this past year for Marvel to further diversify the cast and crew of the MCU. We are still waiting for Captain Marvel to land a female director, but a rumor earlier in the year claimed to know who Marvel was looking at. OK! Magazine reported that Marvel was willing to offer Angelina Jolie $20 million to direct the movie. This rumor is still plausible, but if recent patterns hold, also unlikely. Jolie has been doing passion projects and Marvel has been hiring unknown directors.
3. Russo Brothers Directing Infinity War
Back in March, in the midst of the hunt for Spider-Man, a big rumor dropped regarding the end of Phase 3. Birth.Movies.Death. reported that Anthony and Joe Russo will jump from Captain America: Civil War to direct both parts of Avengers: Infinity War. This has since been confirmed by Marvel and looks to be a great decision from the studio and for the directors.
4. Captain Marvel Secretly Cast For Age of Ultron
One rumor that never seemed to die was the appearance of Captain Marvel in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joss Whedon confirmed that she was at one point set to make her debut but ultimately they never cast anyone for the role. Well a little over a month before the movie hit theaters, before the foundation of Heroic Hollywood, Umberto Gonzalez reported that not only would Captain Marvel debut in Age of Ultron but that she had already been cast as well. This was definitely untrue and since we have not had any sort of solid news on what stage Marvel is in with casting the character, it seems unlikely she will debut before Infinity War at this point.
5. Adam McKay Up To Direct Marvel Movie
When Edgar Wright dropped out of Ant-Man, there was a time where Adam McKay looked to be the man to take over directing duties. Ultimately, Peyton Reed got the job and knocked it out of the park, with McKay helping rewrite the script. Marvel was very happy with what he contributed to the movie, which lead Latino-Review to report him being one of the directors Marvel wants on an upcoming project. They speculated that Inhumans would be the best fit, and it remains one of the few Phase 3 movie without a director. This rumor can be labeled as true with Feige saying he’s “in the running for everything.”
6. Planet Hulk Movie in the Works
There has been no shortage of rumors about Hulk going on space adventures. These rumors popped up again this year when Mark Ruffalo told IGN, “Well he’s going to space. Yeah, I mean there’s some talk of maybe Planet Hulk.” The prospects of a Planet Hulk movie look about as good as the chances of Edward Norton playing the Hulk again. While there will not be a Planet Hulk movie, elements of it will likely pop up when he appears in Thor: Ragnarok, as was recently confirmed.
7. Doctor Strange Will Cameo In Iron Fist
People at one point had doubts that the Iron Fist series would even be made for Netflix. This led to plenty of rumors and speculation on the series, some more outlandish than others. This one could go either way at this point. Earlier this year, Bleeding Cool reported that Doctor Strange will make a cameo appearance in the series, with Benedict Cumberbatch helping out in some capacity. The Netflix shows have stayed away from connecting too heavily with the MCU, but that would definitely change should the Sorcerer Supreme appear.
8. Asa Butterfield Cast As Spider-Man
2016 will give us the debut of the MCU version of Spider-Man, with Tom Holland set in the role. However, if an earlier report from 2015 was believed to be true, Asa Butterfield would have been the new web-slinger. Latino-Review and Umberto Gonzalez, who have since deleted the post, reported that he was in final negotiations but the deal was basically set in stone. What happened with this deal? We will never know.
9. Matthew McConaughey Eyed For Spider-Man Villain
Matthew McConaughey has had his share of superhero news this year. He was courted by both Marvel and DC, even passing on a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but the first rumored role was him joining the Spider-Man reboot as the main villain. That Hashtag Show reported if the deal went through that he would play Norman Osborn. This looks to be untrue with Marvel intent on bringing a new villain to the reboot.
10. Red Hulk May Appear In Civil War
We couldn’t go around talking about rumors without bringing up a few of our own. We here at MCUExchange reported that in his return to the MCU, Thunderbolt Ross would make the turn to Red Hulk during Captain America: Civil War. While we do not know enough about the story at this point, it is something that could still happen, although with a lack of Bruce Banner, it seems unlikely.
11. Jason Statham Eyed For Bullseye
This rumor did not last very long, although I would have been very interested in seeing how it played out. Latino-Review reported that Jason Statham was potentially going to play Bullseye in Season 2 of Daredevil. The deal apparently fell apart shortly after it was reported, with Statham going on to bash Marvel actors as a whole. This report seems to be true, but there has been no news on the Bullseye character since then, so he could miss out on the series as a whole.
12. Ava DuVernay Will Direct Black Panther
The directing job for Black Panther is officially still open, with Ryan Coogler not yet confirmed, but if things would have gone differently, Ava DuVernay would have had the job. We here at MCUExchange reported that she would direct the movie. This was a case of early reporting, since she got the offer but ultimately passed on the project.
13. Rachel McAdams Eyed For Female Lead In Doctor Strange
When Marvel was looking to add talent around Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange, a rumor popped up about the female lead in the movie. Heroic Hollywood reported that Rachel McAdams was offered the role during the summer. This has since been confirmed by Marvel and although her role is still under wraps, we recently got some new details regarding her character..
14. Kraven the Hunter Could Be Spider-Man Villain
We do not know much about the plot of the Spider-Man reboot, but with the film set to start filming next summer, we should learn more shortly. During the past summer, The Daily Superhero reported that Spider-Man would go head-to-head with none other than Kraven the Hunter. This rumor was later reported by other sites, and yet, this one is still up in the air.
15. Tony Stark Creates Spider-Man Suit And Web Shooters
Here comes another Spider-Man rumor. Latino-Review reported that while the Iron Spider suit will not appear in Captain America: Civil War, Tony Stark will still help upgrade the young hero. They reported that not only will Stark make him a new suit, but also be responsible for creating his web shooters. We will find out the validity to this rumor in May, but I personally hope Spidey makes his own shooters.
16. Hulk Will Be In Thor: Ragnarok
One of the biggest scoops of 2015 has to be this one, not only because of how exciting it is, but it does also include the biggest Avenger. JoBlo reported that Hulk would be making his next MCU appearance in Thor: Ragnarok. This has since been confirmed by other outlets and Mark Ruffalo himself.
17. Valkyrie May Be Introduced In Thor: Ragnarok
Since we’re talking about Ragnarok, someone else might be making an appearance. Birth.Movies.Death. reported that Valkyrie is another character that should appear in Thor: Ragnarok. This is unconfirmed at this point, but does not come as a complete surprise with there being concept art for her in Thor: The Dark World.
18. Marvel Gets Fantastic Four Rights Back
Outisde of the MCU, Fox brought the Fantastic Four back to theaters this year, but did not have the result they wanted. This brought about rumors of what will happen with the rights, and at one point it looked like Marvel got more toys. Den of Geek reported that Marvel not only regained the rights to Fantastic Four, but also Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom, and Galactus. Sadly, this has not happened, yet, with both Fox and Marvel denying the report.
19. Punisher Replacing Iron Fist Series
Season 2 of Daredevil will bring the Punisher into the MCU. Not long ago, Peel the Orange reported that Marvel was so happy with Jon Bernthal‘s portrayal that he would be getting his own series in place of the struggling Iron Fist series. This report is definitely false, with Iron Fist moving forward in its development.
20. Vision’s Civil War Fate
The first MCU film of 2016 will be Captain America: Civil War, which will feature the second appearance of Paul Bettany as Vision. The following could be considered a rumor if it turns out to be true. Based on a report from That Hashtag Show at the end of the movie, Vision will leave Earth and head to space. This would leave him open to crossovers with Thor and the Guardians. We will know whether or not this is true come May.
21. Mar-Vell Is Star-Lord’s Father
One of the biggest questions of 2015 was who is the father of Star-Lord. We know we will learn the answer in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but one rumor claimed to know the identity. Heroic Hollywood reported that Mar-Vell will be the character that is his father in the movie. This rumor went viral very quickly and lead to a VERY strong denial by James Gunn that this was the case. Hopefully who the character is can remain a mystery up until the movie releases even though we will undoubtedly learn the actor playing him.
22. Scott Buck Named Iron Fist Showrunner
At one point, it was unclear if Iron Fist would in fact be made, but one of the latest reports gave them a showrunner. Heroic Hollywood and Comicbook.com joined forces to figure out that Scott Buck would become the series’ showrunner. Marvel went on to quickly confirm the news.
23. Ending For Captain America: Civil War
The last MCU rumor of 2015 is potentially a huge spoiler for Captain America: Civil War, so we will not lay out the entire report here. If you are interested in knowing what That Hashtag Show reported will happen, we wrote up the news here. This rumor will only be confirmed or denied when we see the movie next May.
So there you have it! Those are the biggest rumors that came out this year. Did we miss any? Have a favorite? Share your thoughts with us! Here’s to a great 2016, filled with even more reports and rumors.
