The Luke Cage cast was on hand at this year’s San Diego Comic Con to promote the upcoming series. The cast, alongside Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb, took the stage on Thursday, where they debuted the first teaser trailer to an insanely positive response from fans. It was in that teaser trailer that we got our first official look at Mahershala Ali as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes. Following their huge panel, the Luke Cage cast made their way through the press line, and that’s where the folks at HitFix had the chance to speak with Ali about his character in the series.

Much like Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk, Ali’s villain appears to be rather complex as his character appears to fall more into a gray area of sorts. According to the actor, as the series humanizes him, something we’ve also seen the Netflix shows do with Kingpin and Kilgrave (David Tennant in Jessica Jones), we’ll see him as sort of a hero in his own right.

If there’s one thing I’ve come to accept with the Netflix shows, it’s that, at some point, I’ll end up feeling a tinge of sympathy for the villain. So I can’t wait to see what Ali brings to the show when it premieres on September 30th!
