Back at the beginning of the creation of the MCU, Marvel was in the early stages of filling out their universe and looking at all possibilities. In the lead up to Thor, newcomers Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston joined the film in the lead roles of Thor and Loki. But what about their family? The brothers needed their father and that led Marvel to hiring Anthony Hopkins as Odin.

Marvel does not normally just look at one actor for a role, but often many, and we now know who else almost got the role. In an interview with The Guardian, Mel Gibson was asked about the superhero wave in Hollywood and if he had ever been approached for a role. Apparently, he almost played Odin instead of Hopkins.

Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it.

Robert Downey Jr. has previously campaigned for Gibson to direct a Marvel film, but we do not know if he has any interest in doing one. He was asked for his thoughts on the genre as a whole, and he does not seem like too big of a fan, even though he does think some are good.

Some are good. Some are kind of funny … Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man. And some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times … There is a slight shift in film.

I can’t see Gibson directing a Marvel movie in the near future, but due to his relationship with Downey, if Iron Man 4 does happen, I could see him having a role. Heck, if Marvel was looking at him to join the Thor franchise and Surtur is actually in Thor: Ragnarok, he could do the voice. Let us know if you want to see Gibson join the MCU and in what role in the comments below!
