While at New York Comic Con this past weekend members of the press had a chance to speak to the cast of Jessica Jones, including Mike Colter, who will make his debut as Luke Cage in the upcoming series prior to headlining his own show sometime in 2016. Prior to his appearance at NYCC, we knew that Cage would appear in around six episodes of Jessica Jones‘s first season and that he’d already have his powers when we met him. Other than that, information regarding his role in the show has been relatively quiet. We knew that the show will follow Alias to some extent, but we just weren’t sure what that extent would be.
Speaking to IGN, Colter opened up – as much as he could – about where we’ll find Cage going into Jessica Jones and what his relationship is like with Jessica. Make sure to watch the entire interview as there’s an appearance from Jessica Jones herself, Krysten Ritter.
Comicbook.com was also able to snag an interview with Colter, where he elaborated a bit more on his character, as well as revealing a bit more about his upcoming series, Luke Cage, which is currently filming its first season in New York.
“I can tell you what they’ve allowed me to, which is basically, Luke Cage will take place a few months after Jessica Jones,” Colter said. “So in real time, if you watch Jessica Jones, you’ll find [at the end] Luke Cage uptown in Harlem, working, trying to make ends meet. Luke Cage really hasn’t figured out what he’s doing. He’s tending bar, he’s bouncing around. And for good reason, he’s a fugitive, he has some skeletons in his closet
“He’s trying to basically stay off the radar. The people he hangs around with, though, are in need. Ultimately, he’d rather be alone, but with the way he’s equipped he does step up. That’s what it’s about, it’s about finding that inner feeling to make you want to take action. Sometimes we just sit around, and sit on our hands and don’t do anything because it’s like ‘hey, that’s not my problem.’ You can’t do that when you’re a superhero. You have these gifts, now use them.”
If you read our breakdown of New York Comic Con post, chances are you saw the tweet about Marvel having a replica of Jessica’s office on the convention floor for fans, and they managed to sneak in a bunch of interesting bits that are easy to ignore upon first glance. Hidden in these articles is the fate of certain Luke Cage character from the comics and the role she plays in his story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Note: If you’re trying to remain spoiler free, I’d suggest not reading the news articles below.)
And now I’ll leave you with Colter saying Luke Cage’s signature catchphrase.
