Last season on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we got to meet Melinda May’s (Ming-Na Wen) ex-husband Dr. Andrew Garner (Blair Underwood). He was brought on as a consultant by Coulson to help with psychological evaluations on Daisy as she learned about her new powers. May finished the season by grabbing a red bikini and heading to an exotic location with Garner, with the hopes of rekindling the romance between them.
Underwood has been confirmed to return since July and has recently been making the rounds with Ming-Na as they prepare for season 3 to start tomorrow night. Since we will get answers to some of the questions we may have in the first few episodes, the duo has been keeping their mouths shut on their characters’ status on the show.
They have been promoting the show though and talk about Dr. Garner’s role this season, the passionate fans, and their chemistry. Underwood sat down with CBR to talk about what he will be doing this season and said,
As you know, this season’s really about building this Inhumans team — these “Secret Warriors.” Being built primarily by Coulson and Daisy, but my lane in that is as a psychologist. He does the evaluation of all the Inhumans; as when we met him, he was evaluating Skye, helping her make that transition. It’s a lot of transitional stuff. But it’s all new. You got all these special powers, everybody’s different, everybody’s power’s different — he’s trying to figure it out, and he’s a little off-balance himself.
One of the reasons for him being “off-balance” could be him and May trying to fix their broken relationship. Here is what they said while talking to TV Insider,
Underwood- They’re wanting to rekindle their former marriage and relationship and we know that there is a very strong bond between the two.
Wen- So you guys will find out in season 3 how things turn out. Or do they?
Underwood and Wen are longtime friends and that’s what makes Wen believes help them convey such a genuine chemistry on screen together,
It was so easy for us to play people with history because we had it. That’s where you see the chemistry.
They also spoke with 6ABC about how much the show has grown and Wen points out that the fans are to thank but also the writers.
We have such a smart audience and they’re such fans, sometimes fanatically, about Marvel. They’re also very vocal and I really think that we took a lot of what they said to heart in many ways. But also I believe our writers and producers did have an agenda that the actors weren’t privy to because that first season we were tied in to [Captain America] Winter Soldier. . . They’re were quite a lot of obstacles.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for season 3 tomorrow night on ABC at 9 p.m. EST.
