Marvel is continuing to pick up steam with its TV properties, with the reveal today that it has worked up yet another new series with Freeform, this time in the form of “New Warriors. “As expected, New Warriors is going to focus in on the character of Squirrel Girl and it will also be Marvel’s first live-action scripted comedy series. If you guys remember at all, a few months ago a rumor went around saying that Marvel TV and ABC were actively developing a New Warriors show for Squirrel girl to star in. Turned out to be legit AF after all.

New Warriors revolves around about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world … even if the world isn’t ready.

In the comics, the New Warriors are a group of super-powered teenagers who are most well known for their part in the Civil War story arc. It’s certainly interesting to see Marvel use this group to push Squirrel Girl of all, but it should be fun nonetheless.

The series will feature fan-favorite “Squirrel Girl” (Doreen Green) as a totally empowering fan girl—tough, optimistic and a natural leader. Doreen is confident and has the powers of a squirrel… She’s acrobatic, can fight and talk to other squirrels. Her most important trait is that she has faith in people and teaches them to believe in themselves.

The show has been picked up straight-to-series with Freeform, joining Cloak & Dagger on the same network. Just like that drama, New Warriors will have a 10-episode season with 30-minute episodes.

Cougar Town and Scrubs alum Kevin Biegel is also reportedly near a deal to write the script as well as serve as showrunner according to Hollywood Reporter. Currently, the plan is to have the show on the air sometime in 2018, but a concrete release date obviously isn’t available just yet, although there is a chance that New Warriors and Cloak & Dagger could air in the same schedule in Winter 2018. However, that feels somewhat unlikely to me. Casting should begin shortly as well.
