When Ant-Man hit movie theaters last July, it did so with various obstacles standing in its way. Not only had the film last its original director when Edgar Wright departed the project shortly before production began, but it was also a film about a character that many fans seemed either uninterested in or unsure of – and the rumors concerning Janet’s fate within the film hadn’t happened to ease worries beforehand. And yet, when it was released, the film managed to not only become a success financially, but also a nice surprise for fans as it quickly proved to be another great entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So it wasn’t entirely surprising when Marvel announced that the character would be getting a sequel, with 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, the first film within the MCU to see one of its heroines named within the title.

While at Sundance to promote his latest film, “The Fundamentals of Caring”, Paul Rudd took some time to talk about the upcoming sequel – as well as where they’re at with writing – and what it’s like seeing his character become a bigger part of the MCU. Deadline has already confirmed that the original writing team – Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari, and Paul Rudd – will return to write Ant-Man and the Wasp, with Adam McKay set to help in some capacity in regards to the story. For Rudd, the possibility of a sequel was something that was definitely on the table when he originally signed on to portray the character, although it wasn’t a guarantee. However, with a sequel now confirmed, he’s stated that meetings for the film are currently being scheduled, and that they’ll begin writing on the film “soon”.

“I know that when I signed up for it that there was always the potential that they’d do another one or it would tie in in some way, but specifically, I wasn’t aware and I’m still not totally aware of how that’s the case,” he told us. “We are doing a second one, so those meetings are starting to be scheduled and underway as far as what it’s going to be. We’ll start writing it soon.”

When joining the MCU, one thing actors need to keep in mind is their every growing filming schedule, as they’re often brought in to work on other films outside of their own, which could make it difficult to sign on for other projects. For Rudd, however, this doesn’t appear to be a problem. The actor, who went from Ant-Man directly into the big leagues with Captain America: Civil War, has found Marvel to be supportive when it comes to scheduling. Which is nice to hear with his character’s role set to continue to grow over the next phase or two.

“It’s been very easy,” Rudd said about scheduling with all the potential Marvel movies he has coming up. “Marvel’s been great, as far as if I have something else and they’ll work around it. It’s not like I’m working on a series which might be a little trickier as far as schedule. I worked on ‘Civil War’ and I didn’t really work on it for very long, but as far as ‘Ant-Man 2,’ I already know when that’s going to go, so you just kind of plan accordingly. If anything comes along that I can film before or after and it works out time-wise and it makes sense, Marvel’s been supportive.”

You can currently purchase Ant-Man on DVD & Blu-Ray, while the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, isn’t set to hit the big screen until July 6th, 2018.
