It has been over eight months since Marvel announced that Jon Bernthal was joining the MCU and would be playing the Punisher. We finally got a great extended look at the character in the most recent trailer for season 2 of Daredevil and it looks like we weren’t wrong to think Bernthal was the perfect choice.
It has been widely rumored and reported that he could be getting his own spin-off series after he debuts. Marvel has yet to officially confirm any talks of development, but Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos has said any character could get their own show. Marvel Television’s Executive Vice President Jeph Loeb has previously said that spin-offs are possible, and now he is talking about them again due to the aforementioned reports.
While talking to Digital Spy, Loeb was asked about the Punisher potentially getting his own series. He remained coy about the possibility but did say that we may be getting ahead of ourselves, the character, and Netflix.
I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening.
This is not to say that Marvel and Netflix are not currently working on a script and story, but just that it is not something they are 100% sure will happen. Should the audience react positively towards Frank Castle, Loeb reiterates that a spin-off could still happen.
It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them.
The more I see of Bernthal as Punisher, the more I am certain that he is going to kill (both literally and figuratively) in the role. Thankfully we do not have to wait that much longer until we get to learn the full story, especially with a new trailer coming later this week.
Season 2 of Daredevil will debut exclusively on Netflix on March 18th at 12:01 PST.
