Rachel McAdams, who plays Doctor Strange’s friend and colleague Dr. Christine Palmer in the upcoming Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange, appears in a video introducing a new contest that draws its inspiration from the good doctor, a man of science who turns to magic. The contest, officially named the Doctor Strange: The Magic of STEM Challenge, encourages young women aged 15 to 18, to examine the miraculous in the world and find the science behind it.

As McAdams states in the video,

Throughout history, ideas once thought possible only through magic have become a reality through science and technology.

The challenge for the entrants is to find something in the world that they do not understand, then work with an adult mentor to discover the physical reasons behind that “something” using the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. The entrants then make a video in the format of a vlog “episode” which is then uploaded to Marvel Studios. According to the company’s STEM challenge website (drstrangemagicofstem.com), five finalists will be selected and each finalist will get an expense-paid trip to Hollywood, California for her and a parent or legal guardian to walk the red carpet at the World Premiere of Doctor Strange. In addition, each finalist will receive $1000 deposited into a high-yield savings account and a tour of the Walt Disney Studios. In addition, the grand prize winner will win a mentorship by the Walt Disney digital team, will produce a professional vlog from start to finish, and then have that episode show through a “Walt Disney Company media platform.”

Also appearing in the short video, tasked with delineating the rules, is Maia Dua, the winner of the similar Captain America: Civil War – Girls Reforming the Future Challenge. Over 1000 girls accepted that challenge as well as the similar contests undertaken for Ant Man and Thor: The Dark World.

Submissions for this challenge must be received from September 19th, 2016 to October 5th, 2016. The finalists’ prizes each have an approximate retail value of $2500 and the grand prize winner’s package has a value of just over $4000.

Doctor Strange opens on November 4th, 2016 in the US with the premiere referenced in this contest occurring on October 20, 2016.
