When Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC back in the fall of 2013, the show’s tagline and biggest selling point was “It’s all connected.” The idea of a shared universe of characters that transcends the silver screen and reaches into the world of television was unprecedented, and this idea helped fuel the hype behind the show. Because AoS exists within the larger world of the MCU, the plot of the show has been affected by the events of MCU films on multiple occasions. For example, the team was tasked with cleaning up the damage dealt in London after the events of Thor: the Dark World, Samuel L. Jackson made two cameo appearances as Nick Fury in two episodes, and the season 1 finale centered around the team fighting HYDRA in the aftermath of the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. shown in Captain America: the Winter Soldier. This fall, however, we may finally see an Avenger make an appearance on the show.
According to TVLine, a returning show belonging to one of the big 5 networks (ABC, CW, FOX, NBC, CBS) has just filmed a shocking guest appearance:
The onscreen twist — which was shot earlier this month under a Star Wars-level veil of secrecy — is set to air during the show’s season premiere.
So far, that’s all we know, but one of the best guesses is that an Avenger may be appearing on the Agents of SH.I.E.L.D. for the first time. This kind of guest star appearance would be unprecedented for the MCU, and would likely be the studio’s best effort to boost ratings for the season premiere. Here are our best guesses as to who may show up:
Tony Stark/Iron Man
After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Tony Stark is one of the only Avengers who is currently not on the wrong side of the law due to his compliance with the Sokovia Accords. Also, given his previous involvement with S.H.I.E.L.D. as a consultant, Stark would be an ideal candidate to confer with the new Director in an effort to rebuild and bring the organization back to its (non-HYDRA) roots. With that and the fact that the show has been in production in Los Angeles, it gives some plausibility to the rumor.
Doctor Stephen Strange
With the release of Doctor Strange less than three months away, it is also likely that Stephen Strange could make his first appearance in the MCU on the small screen. Though technically Strange has already made his debut appearance in the form of the film’s prequel comics, it wouldn’t be out of the range of possibility for Strange to appear on the show, especially considering Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be delving into supernatural elements with the inclusion of Ghostrider as a recurring character this season. That, coupled with the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch has juggled both big screen and television roles in the past due to his leading part as the titular character in BBC’s Sherlock leads us to believe it could be a possibility.
Finally, there is a small chance that Hawkeye could be the first Avenger to appear on the show, but it is unlikely. At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers freed his team from the raft, including Hawkeye. However, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent would still be considered an outlaw and a fugitive of the law because of his allegiance with Team Cap. Still, anything is possible, and dire circumstances may cause the team to reach out for Barton’s help in the season premiere.
While this is all still a rumor, any of these potential guest appearances would be a ton of fun to see, and we won’t have to wait long to find out if any of them are true.
The fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere on ABC on September 20th in its new 10 PM timeslot. Need to catch-up before then? The first three season are now available to stream on Netflix!
