UPDATE: As he has with many rumors in the past, James Gunn has taken to twitter to debunk this rumor, calling it “nonsense”. SchmoesKnow, where the report originally came from, has since deleted their article.

Original article below:

With Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 having wrapped filming months ago, potential storylines and characters that may give us a peak to the plot of James Gunns’ second entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe are beginning to surface.

One potential storyline was reported by pop culture website Schmoes Know earlier today and if true, it could help shape the future of the MCU. Schmoes Know is reporting that the Elders of the Universe will play a major role in the upcoming Guardians 2 film.

In the Marvel Comicverse, each member of the Elders of the Universe is the lone surviving members of the very first races created after the “Big Bang”, the creation of the universe as we know it. The Elders were granted immortality by Death herself and since they are cosmic beings, they do tend to appear in many storylines revolving around the Infinity Gems, or as the MCU call them Infinity Stones.

The primary group of Elders, as first seen in Avengers #28 in 1966 include The Collector, The Grandmaster, The Gardener, The Contemplator, The Possession, The Runner, and The Champion of the Universe. Another member of note is Ego the Living Planet, whom will be played by actor Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.

As you may already know, The Collector has already been introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film thanks to the great acting of Benicio Del Toro. While Gunn has denied that The Collector will appear in Vol. 2, the guys at Schmoes Know say otherwise. In addition to Del Toro, Jeff Goldblum has been confirmed as playing The Grandmaster in next fall’s Thor: Ragnarok.

Not to forget that Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone have both been cast in future MCU roles that have yet to be confirmed. Could either of them be playing on the Elders? It makes sense that more I start thinking about it. With three of the Elders either having appeared in MCU movies already or having been confirmed for future MCU movies with the addition of the Elders’ main role of dealing with Infinity Stones as MCU starts gearing everything up for Avengers: Infinity War, I’d say this is report carries quite a bit of weight.
