First mentioned in the infamous Sony email leaks back in 2014, a new rumor has resurfaced about Sony’s plans to move forward with a Silver Sable movie, with Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Suffragette) reportedly in talks to write the script. We previously reported the unsurprising news that Sony wants to use their rights to Spider-Man characters to create multiple franchises, so a film starring Silver Sable, a character who is most often associated with Spidey, makes some sense.
Silver Sable is a bounty hunter and anti-hero who has served as both an ally and enemy of Spider-Man as she leads a group of War Criminal-hunting mercenaries called The Wild Pack. As a character firmly rooted in the Spider-Man mythology, film rights to Silver Sable almost certainly belong to Sony, but their recent co-operation with Marvel Studios suggests that a Silver Sable movie could take place within the MCU, much like the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.
On the June 24, 2016 episode of Meet the Movie Press, where this story first appeared, Forbes reporter Simon Thompson went on to speculate that Eli Roth (The Green Inferno, Hostel) could be interested in directing, saying:
Now, this might be pure speculation, but…I spoke to Eli Roth, and Eli Roth is talking to a studio about a comic book character, that the studio did not know that they had the rights to, that he is interested in turning into a movie.
While a movie starring Silver Sable should definitely be considered just a rumor for now, the idea is certainly interesting, and talented names like Abi Morgan and Eli Roth could make it a very exciting project.
What do you think? Would you like to see a Silver Sable movie, or should Sony stick to only one franchise and let Marvel Studios handle the rest? Sound off in the comments below!
