If there’s one criticism of Marvel Studios’ films that we’ve all heard (and even thought ourselves) it’s that the villains don’t seem to carry much weight. Though Doctor Strange is opening to rave reviews thus far, word is that Mad Mikkelsen‘s Kaecilius is yet another in the long line of formulaic, less than spectacular antagonists. Given that this was Doctor Strange’s first appearance in the MCU, however, nobody should be too disturbed by the focus on the origins and journey of the good Doctor. The question is, what will Marvel do with him next and director Scott Derrickson seems to have a pretty good idea.
Derrickson, whose passion for the character helped seal the deal as the director of the first film told Den of Geek he has already begun to think about the sequel, saying “I love the character, I love the visual possibilities, and I know the comics so well – [the first movie is] the tip of an iceberg. There’s so much progress that can be made.“
The progress that Derrickson seems to want to make should help MCU fans feel some sense of relief as he means to take the films villains to the next level, taking inspiration from one of the best comic book movies of all time. “What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep. And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange.“
Given Derrickson’s love for the comics and his plan for the sequels, it’s clear why they cast such an impressive actor as Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role of Karl Mordo. While characters such as Dormammu, Mephisto and Nightmare will make for interesting villains as well, we all know Mordo and Strange are destined for a confrontation and it’s great to hear a Marvel director excited about having a truly great villain.
While no date has been set for a Doctor Strange sequel as of now, it won’t be too surprising to have one announced in the near future. With the film on track for a good opening and becoming a critical hit, Marvel will likely add another adventure for the Sorcerer Supreme to the list soon, perhaps taking up one of the yet untitled 2020 films.
