Yep, you heard it right. Over at NYCC, it was announced less than an hour ago that Sigourney Weaver has been cast as the main big bad in next year’s The Defenders. No word yet on who she’s playing but my bet’s on The Beast, a demonic entity worshiped by The Hand. Here’s the official press release from Marvel.
“Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever! She is by definition a class act,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television.
“Sigourney Weaver, what more is there to say,” said Cindy Holland,Vice President of original content at Netflix. “She’s a formidable actress and we are thrilled to have her join our remarkable cast alongside Charlie, Krysten, Mike and Finn.”
Weaver’s addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is massive. Not only are we getting an actor of her caliber and legacy in our little pocket universe but we’re also getting a much needed female presence in the pantheon of MCU villains. To think just a few days ago, we ran a story about Weaver making some off-handed comments about the MCU. And now she is in it. Ellen Ripley is officially part of the MCU. You can stop pinching yourself.
