There were several major introductions in Captain America: Civil War. It was the first time we got to see both Spider-Man and the Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the first time that we saw Ant-Man turn into Giant-Man. However, Joe Russo revealed to ComicBook.com that there were other characters considered in the early days of mapping out the movie. In the end, though, it was decided that they should only include characters for which they could also provide some history.
“We had so many characters in that movie as it was,” Joe Russo tells ComicBook.com. “We consider everything, obviously, but with so many characters in that movie as it was to try and entertain adding another character and to get to the Red Hulk, you have to add a back story. You have to substantiate the narrative to get to that. [Thaddeus Ross], on our list of priorities, he was there sort of as the government’s agenda and not to add another complicated super powered character to the mix.”
There were no characters in Civil War who felt like strangers, even if you were unfamiliar with the source material. To get this level of character depth, the Russo brothers put a bit of planning into who will show up in the MCU, considering all of the options.
“We had a board when we started this process of the movies with these Avengers characters that have ever graced the screen in a Marvel film and a list of characters that we have at our disposal that haven’t graced the screen,” Joe Russo explains. “We spent the last six to eight months crafting stories around the cornucopia of characters at our disposal so anything is possible.”
That cornucopia includes Iron Spider, who Marvel may be able to use now that the MCU has access to Spider-Man. When asked if he was considered for Civil War or might be showing up in Avengers: Infinity War Russo left the door open.
“Again, that falls in that category of anything’s possible,” he says. “We consider everything.”
At one time, the Russo brothers claimed to be considering up to 67 characters for Infinity War, and they definitely plan to introduce new characters in the film. Who do you hope they choose for that epic battle?
