Spoiler Warning: While this is a rumor, and should be treated as such for the time being, I’m still going to include a spoiler warning in case the report should prove to be accurate.
Last week, Geek.com reported on Spider-Man’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They followed that report up with yet another scoop yesterday, this time turning their attention to Thor: Ragnarok and the status of Odin. Now today, they’re back with yet another scoop, this time concerning Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and a certain fan-favorite planet fans have been hoping to see within the MCU – Ego, the Living Planet.
Sources close to both Geek.com and production on the film have told us that a fan favorite from the comic books will be making an appearance in the upcoming film: Ego, the Living Planet, is set to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
This is huge — in the way that a sentient planet is actually a huge character the team will have to deal with. Now, most Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers may not know who Ego is, but for comic readers it’s a great treat to bring in one of the most unusual characters in the books, much less that would appear on screen.
This is interesting for various reasons. If you’ll recall, when the mysterious planet that Jemma was transported to on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was first showcased in episode 3×05 – “4,722 Hours” – many assumed the planet was none other than Ego, the Living Planet. (It wasn’t.) And as Geek.com points out in their article, Ego is most notably cited as a Thor villain. So although it may seem odd to some to introduce Ego, the Living Planet in the Guardians sequel, it’s actually rather exciting to consider what James Gunn and company could do with the character should he be included in the film as reported.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 is set begin filming in Atlanta next month. While we’re bound to get an official cast list from Marvel either prior to the start of production, or a few weeks into production as they’ve recently done with both Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange, I highly doubt we’ll receive any confirmation on this report for some time should it end up being accurate.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 will hit movie theaters on May 5th, 2017.
