James Gunn‘s firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been a heavy blow for many fans. He had such a unique approach to his films and he truly loved making films about a ragtag team of galactic misfits. Dave Bautista has even hinted at him wanting to quit his role as Drax if Gunn‘s script isn’t used. We haven’t heard much about the future of the third Guardians film as Marvel Studios has been rather silent on the project and it is still put on indefinite hiatus. Comic writer Jim Starlin, architect of storylines like The Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War, also has fears regarding Gunn‘s firing. He fears that Adam Warlock, who was teased at the end of the second film, may not make his MCU debut after all without the director’s original vision.
So how much of Gunn’s script remains, how much of the game plan using Warlock in this movie and maybe down the line, you know, Marvel has their own master plan that supersedes all the movies. Feige is basically the captain of that ship, so I don’t know what he has planned, but I have high hopes that we’ll see old Adam coming to life.
He does point out that he is not kept in the loop on what Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are planning but he hopes to see Warlock make his grand appearance. Some films have given us small cameos that would not pay off until much later, most notably Thanos’ first appearance in The Avengers. Sadly, there are also some that never saw the light of the day, such as the ending tease for The Incredible Hulk that teased the potential first appearance of The Leader. Gunn was supposed to push the franchise beyond Avengers 4. The goal was to establish more of the MCU’s galactic frontier and offer more stories that may have included Warlock in some way. There is the potential that Marvel Studios has not completely given up on James Gunn returning to the franchise as soon as some time has passed. The film was already in pre-production and unlike in the rather similar situation like Ant-Man, there have been no rumors of any directors trying to take his place. It will be interesting to see how Adam Warlock fits into the larger picture.
Do you think we will see Adam Warlock’s MCU appearance any time soon? What are your personal hopes for the character?
