With the show due to drop in just over a month’s time, the Luke Cage hype machine continues apace. Most won’t have failed to notice that the marketing has been putting solid emphasis on the musicality of the show which is apparently so permeated by hip-hop culture, even the episode titles – drip-fed on Twitter by series showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker – have been informed by Gang Starr tracks such as “Step in the Arena” and “Moment of Truth”.

In a video released today, we’re now getting a little commentary from the talent behind the soundtrack itself – namely American composer Adrian Younge and rappers A$AP Ferg and Method Man. Younge specifically discusses the various influences viewers can expect to hear accompanying the series.

“We have music that is inspired by Tribe Called Quest, but at the same time inspired by Wu and Ennio Morricone. We all came together and said we wanted to make something great. Not just for black people and minorities, just something great that happens to be based in our culture.”

Even in this short clip, the enthusiasm for the project from these guys is palpable and so hopefully we can look forward to a distinctive and authentic musical presence felt throughout the show.

And hopefully we won’t be waiting too long for a digital, maybe even physical(?), release. While it’s typically taken a while for the Netflix soundtracks to get released following their show’s initial debut, I’d be interested to see if this one doesn’t get fast-tracked to appease the demand from music and Marvel fans alike.
