The untitled Spider-Man 3 in the MCU is quickly becoming one of the most massive films in all of Phase 4. Jamie Foxx’s Electro will be there, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will be there, and the ever-elusive MCU multiverse will be there.
Filming is underway in Atlanta right now as the movie works its way toward theatrical release in December 2021, but there are still so many details that are a mystery to the public. Rumors have flown around ever since the Doctor Strange casting announcement about the possibility of not only an MCU multiverse finally becoming a reality, but also on other past characters that could show up outside of Electro. That mystery becomes a little clearer thanks to some earth-shattering news that will put Spider-Man 3 right back into the spotlight.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Alfred Molina is officially joining the cast of Marvel and Sony’s untitled Spider-Man 3, reprising his role as Doctor Otto Octavius from 2004’s Spider-Man 2! There are no confirmations yet from either studio or the actor’s representatives.
This is absolutely monumental news for this third solo Spidey adventure as the movie brings back one of the most iconic villain portrayals in superhero movie history. The news also confirms recent rumors from GWW that Molina was seen on set practicing choreography for Doc Ock again, and it’s more exciting than ever to see it come to fruition.
This will be the second time Alfred Molina has taken on Doc Ock since he first filled the role in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy, and as he joins the MCU as the second confirmed villain in Spider-Man 3, the idea of the multiverse is looking as likely as ever. This also brings together all three generations of live action Spider-Man movies as he joins J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson from the original trilogy and Jamie Foxx from the Marc Webb series.
Now fans are waiting to see if these villains are joined by the same number of heroes, potentially with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield suiting up as the web-slinger for a second round. Spider-Man 3 is currently filming in preparation for release on December 17, 2021, and the hype is growing by the day!
