The press reports from the set of Ant-Man & the Wasp are finally here! Sometime last year, a handful of the Hollywood press were flown to the MCU production hub of Atlanta to be treated to some behind-the-scenes goodies. Among several other things, it was revealed that the film takes inspiration from the cult classic TV show Justified, a show I hold dear to my heart, in terms of how the story is populated with all sorts of kooky characters. As if casting the star of Justified Walton Goggins wasn’t enough for them! According to producer Stephen Broussard:
I’m a big Elmore Leonard fan, in the way that there’s all these sort of colorful characters kind of colliding with one another. That feels crime-adjacent, to use that term again, and so we wanted to populate this movie with a lot of antagonists. Not so much people that are like villains or supervillains, but like obstacles in the way. They have their own agendas, their own journeys. They’re not trying to take over the world but they’re clearly standing in the way of our heroes, and Elmore Leonard was such a master at that. The Get Shortys of the world. Everybody is in a circle trying to get somewhere else and just colliding in the middle and that was a huge inspiration for the tone and the framework of where this movie could go.
As a huge fan of Elmore Leonard who’s been diving deep into his body of work for the past 2 years, Broussard’s quote gets me incredibly excited. Justified is filled to the brim with fully-realized characters, despite most of them not having any major relevance in the plot. They add so much color to an already colorful story. The Ant-Man franchise seems like the perfect outing to introduce ancillary characters like Sonny Burch, who I don’t doubt will be played perfectly by Goggins.
