Following much speculation by fans (and this site) Marvel and Freeform have announced their official casting of the leads in their new live-action show Cloak and Dagger. According to a press release on Marvel.com, former Disney Channel actress Olivia Hold and actor Aubrey Joseph have landed the roles much to the pleasure of Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television:
Marvel is delighted to have found our Cloak and Dagger. Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph encompass the true essence of the characters and we are excited for the audience to see them in these roles.
Olivia Holt is known for her roles in the television shows I Didn’t Do It and Kickin’ It while Aubrey Joseph is a relative newcomer whose most recent role is in HBO’s The Night Of. The new Freeform (formerly ABC Family) show deals with the adventures of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, who manifest powers while falling in love. The comics have often focused on the difficulty involved in being young, falling in love, and becoming super-powered. Previously released character breakdowns for Cloak and for Dagger were covered in this MCU Exchange piece but Marvel released these updated breakdowns today along with the casting announcement:
Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.
Showrunner and Executive Producer Joe Pokaski echoed Loeb’s excitement at the casting of two characters that have impacted him for a very long time:
The characters of Tandy and Tyrone have always stood out to me ever since I first met them in the pages of Marvel comics when I was a boy. When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe.
Cloak and Dagger is expected to begin filming in February.
