The production of the untitled fourth Avengers film has been currently underway for some time now but intriguing casting details for the film continue on. Just the other day, it was reported that Wolverine star Hiroyuki Sanada was given a role in the film, fueling fan speculation that the Japan setting for the movie is actually more significant than expected. Now, a new casting call sheet for ‘Mary Lou’ (the working title for both Infinity War and Avengers 4) is suggesting that the 1960’s may play a part in Avengers 4.
Secretaries: Looking for women who appear to be Caucasian, 20s-50s, to portray 1960s secretaries/clerks. Hair must be period-appropriate: no longer than shoulder length, no dye, no modern colors or cuts. Must be dress size 0-8.
Female Engineers: Looking for women who appear to be Caucasian, 20s-50s, to portray 1960s engineers in this VERY small scene. Hair must be period-appropriate: short hair, no longer than shoulder length, no dye, no modern colors or cuts. Must be dress size 0-8.
When you imagine the MCU in the 60’s with engineers and the like, you think the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Peggy, Howard Stark and Hank Pym. One of the exciting parts of having the MCU grow and expand is seeing the storytellers fill in the blanks of history in interesting ways. This could be a scene where we S.H.I.E.L.D. in its infancy, led by Peggy herself and how its origins could play a key part in defeating Thanos. Or it could be something else entirely.
Avengers 4 is shrouded in so much mystery (they can’t even reveal the full title without spoiling Avengers: Infinity War for Buck’s sake!) and this bit of news does nothing to alleviate it one bit. With the Japan stuff, Hawkeye changing identity, and now a potential flashback to the 60’s, we can’t help but wonder if Avengers 4 has some kind of “What If?” moment where we see a completely different MCU. One where Cap goes home from the war and runs SHIELD with Peggy in the 60’s. One where Scott Buck is regarded the greatest showrunner of all time along with giants like David Simon and Vince Gilligan. There’s so much we don’t know!!
