Avengers 4 is going to be batshit insane. We don’t know how exactly but all the set photos are hinting at something major for the entirety of the MCU, prompting fans to speculate whether a time-travel/alternate timeline element will be included in the film. These latest set photos featuring the pulse of the MCU himself, Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark, certainly lend themselves to that idea.

The first photo has Tony wearing S.H.I.E.L.D. SWAT gear, an unusual choice of protective gear for a man who wears a weapon of mass destruction on a daily basis. The other photo has Tony wearing a very distict shirt, the same Black Sabbath shirt he wore back in Avengers. The same shirt he wore when Coulson died in the helicarrier. The same shirt he had on when the Chitauri was summoned to New York. Could this be them revisiting that moment under different circumstances? Is that even the Tony Stark we know under that S.H.I.E.L.D. gear?

‘Stop getting high Charles! Stark isn’t allowed to wear the same shirt twice?!’ He can and that may well be the case! But we gotta take a look at the bigger picture. Just the other day, Mark Ruffalo spoke to Collider about Avengers: Infinity and Avengers 4. Ruffalo described the film as a “mind-boggling” epic space opera that “spans time and space.” Doctor Strange has the time stone. Feige has long teased a totally fresh and unencumbered MCU post-Phase 3. The Russo Brothers have teased the usage of the Reality Stone. Who’s to say Thanos doesn’t alter the universe to his will where the Chitauri invasion didn’t play out like the first film and Avengers aren’t around to stop him? Hawkeye is Ronin. Tony looks like some kind of S.H.I.E.L.D. officer. Up is down and black is white.

If my ramblings aren’t enough to convince you of this possibility, check out this other Avengers 4 set photo that features a very 2012 Avengers Part 1-looking Thor.

It looks like we just might revisit the Battle of NY after all. Avengers 4 is going to be batshit insane, we’re telling you.
