Most of us knew that Avengers: Infinity War could potentially become one of the darkest films in the MCU. It is the end of an era and with it comes the fear of some characters’ stories coming to an end. After ten years, some actors will want to continue their career outside of the MCU and let some newcomers take over beyond Phase 3. The set visit interview with directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed that there are going to be deaths of major characters from the overall MCU. Joe Russo even apologized as Anthony Russo pointed to this being something that fans asked for before giving a deeper insight into their storytelling decisions.

**We’ll say this. We like mature storytelling. We like dramatic storytelling. We like intense storytelling. I think we appreciate conflict, and we appreciate stakes. And without stakes, there really isn’t a lot of value to the story. And I think if you look at the Marvel Universe as a whole as a story that’s been told for ten years, you can look at this as the climax. And the stakes will be higher in this movie than they’ve ever been, times ten.**

The franchise has been criticised for having a particular formula that makes it feel like the film’s do not have high stakes. Superhero films focus on, well, heroes and it is expected for them to win at the end of the story. The Russos have already proven to defy this classic structure when they made Captain America: Civil War. At the end of that film, no one truly came out as a winner or a hero. Everyone survived the events of that film so seeing them tease potential deaths makes it feel like Civil War was just building up to the tragedy that will be Infinity War.

What do you think? Who do you think is going to die?
