At this point, Marvel Studios has so many projects at different stages of development that something is always in the works and today is no different. The site acting-auditions.org has revealed that Marvel has begun the process of casting LEAD and supporting roles for Avengers: Infinity War-Part 1 which is not set to hit theaters until May 4, 2018.
While the site ran with a synopsis that is almost entirely drawn from writer Jim Starlin’s The Infinity War arc and likely not going to be the route the movie follows, it is very interesting to me that Marvel has begun the casting process this early for a film that is not expected to go into production in London until Fall/Winter of 2016.
It’s appropriate to ask why a movie which isn’t filming for at least 15 months might want to start casting now when that timeline clearly does NOT line up with typical Marvel protocol. One possible answer to that is that it’s entirely possible (and even quite likely) that some of the new actors need to be selected now so they can make appearances in some of Marvel Studios’ upcoming films.
With that idea in mind, we can think about what characters that might appear in the Infinity War movies might also show up in Captain America: Civil War (even if they aren’t ready now, there WILL be reshoots), Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the films which will go before camera ahead of Avengers: Infinity War-Part 1. As it stands now, it seems that Thor: Ragnarok may film concurrently with Part 1 of Infinity War, making it the first time Marvel will have two major projects going simultaneously. The Marvel Studios/Sony Spider-Man film will likely begin production ahead of the third Avengers film as well, but I’m not sure Marvel will be dropping major MCU actors into that film when they have 3 others completely under their control.
The new characters could simply be cameos or could play major roles in any of those films, but given that Marvel has limits to the characters that fit the potential roles that they can use, a few major ones come to mind. It’s interesting to consider that the actors cast for any of these potential roles would potentially work with several directors, so it’s possible that any number of them, in addition to Kevin Feige, could be involved in the audition process.
A central character to all of Jim Starlin‘s Infinity works, Warlock is an antithetical character to Thanos and a one-time Guardian of the Galaxy. A self-described Quantum Mage, Warlock also worked allied closely with Doctor Strange during the Infinity Gauntlet story. Hypothetically, an actor cast as Warlock could show up has a harbinger in Doctor Strange before joining Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Avengers: Infinity War as a main character.
Marvel’s analog for the devil, Mephisto is a demon who routinely makes deals for the souls of sentient beings across the cosmos. An arch-enemy to Doctor Strange, Mephisto served at Thanos’ side during The Infinity Gauntlet, though it was only so that he might eventually have access to the Infinity Gems. While an actor cast as Mephisto could show up in Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War, it’s very possible that Loki may fill the role of Mephisto in the MCU.
The brother of Thanos, Starfox, or Eros, is a member of the Titanian Eternals, a race of superbeings from one of Jupiter’s moons. A well-known ladies’ man, Eros could appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 ahead of a key role in Avengers: Infinity War. While he would prove an invaluable ally to the forces opposing Thanos, he would also provide an opportunity for some exposition about his brother’s horrific past.
Another of Titan’s Eternals, Mentor is the father of Thanos. Al Pacino’s (possible) addition to the MCU would provide further exposition about Thanos, while providing a link to Eros and the final character on the list. His incredibly advanced technology on the moon of Titan could also provide the heroes with a base of operations when things go cosmic. If we see Mentor, I’d expect it to be alongside his son Eros.
Born the daughter of Drax the Destroyer and then raised on Titan by some badass kung-fu monks, Moondragon is a powerful character who could join the Guardians of the Galaxy before joining forces with all the heroes of the cosmos to take down Thanos. Everytime I hear James Gunn talk about adding a female member to his sequel, I can’t help but to think of Moondragon. She could easily play an integral role in Guardains of the Galaxy 2 AND both parts of Avengers: Infinity War.
Casting calls take place all the time and the casting process can be lengthy, but with it starting this early, it’s a distinct possibility that we could start seeing some new faces pop up in Marvel’s upcoming films ahead of key roles in Avengers: Infinity War.
Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 opens on May 4th, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 is set to open the following year on May 3rd, 2019.
