In a recent interview with Little White Lies, Ben Wheatley, the director of Free Fire, has said he’s interested in directing a potential Marvel Zombies film. Zombies is one of Marvel’s most out-there properties, as it features many famous Marvel characters being turned into flesh-eating zombies that take over the entire world. If one considers Marvel’s strong focus on PG-13 films that can access a wide range of audience members, it might be challenging to adapt Marvel Zombies to the big screen, a fact that Wheatley acknowledged during the interview:

I dunno. I don’t really know how those things work. Marvel Zombies hasn’t been done which is what I’m interested in. Maybe that’s a bit too niche. Marvel’s interesting in that it’s kind of a hybrid of cinema and television. A very, very expensive TV show that you buy a pass for every three months.

Horror is one of the last elements of the comics that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to explore, but Zombies might be quite a shift for the general public. Still, maybe further down the line we could potentially see the actors that made their characters famous return as zombified versions of themselves.

Sadly, Kevin Feige seems quite focused on their PG-13 productions and will likely avoid going too far into the R-rated direction. As such, a Marvel Zombies film might not come together for quite some time. Of course, if there’s one thing we’ve learned about the MCU, it’s that nothing is ever completely out of the realm of possibility. If the studio ever decides to take the “What If” route and make movies outside of the main MCU continuity, Marvel Zombies could be a perfect fit.
