Let’s preface this by saying the chances of this happening are very slim with the film set to begin production next month. Still, with fans hopeful to see some sort of crossover between the Netflix shows and the films, it’s a rumor that is hard not to root for.

Just a few weeks ago, we got our first introduction to Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. He already has a solo filmed lined up to come out next year and production is set to start in Atlanta this summer. So far we know that Marisa Tomei will reprise her role as Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man, but they are the only pre-established characters set to appear. Laura Harrier and Tony Revolori have both joined the cast alongside Zendaya, but there are plenty of other characters that still need to be cast.

One of those characters will be the villain, because you can’t have a superhero save the world when there isn’t a threat. We know that unfortunately Michael Keaton will not appear, but there have been rumors that Vulture could be a threat for Spidey to go up against. Well, if the latest rumor is to be believed, there is one more villain that will appear.

Now before we get to the rumor, I can not stress enough how big of a rumor this is. It is not only because of who will reportedly appear, but also because of where this rumor originates from. ScreenGeek, formerly known as Peel the Orange, is reporting that Vincent D’Onofrio will make an appearance as Wilson Fisk, bringing the character from Netflix to the big screen. Here is the exact quote from what their source told them.

Marvel Studios is considering having Vincent D’Onofrio reprise his Wilson Fisk role from Daredevil in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

As great as that would be, this sounds an awful lot like wishful thinking. Ever since D’Onofrio made his debut as Fisk in season 1 of Daredevil, fans have wanted him to have more of a presence in the MCU. However, we have heard time and time again just how difficult it is for Marvel Studios and Marvel TV to figure out how to cross over, and I don’t think they’ve figured out how to do it just yet, especially with Fisk. Kingpin is a ruthless and aggressive villain, who last we saw is still in jail. Unless he appears in either Luke Cage or Iron Fist, that is exactly where he will be when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters. Unless the villain Spidey fights originates or breaks out of prison, how Fisk appears would make no sense. Plus, if Marvel was going to put a Netflix character into the movie, Daredevil is clearly the top choice. Once again, this is a rumor coming from an unproven source and dealing with a subject that is incredibly complex so take this rumor with the biggest grain of salt you can find and treat it for what it is – a rumor.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled to hit theaters July 7, 2017.
